Abstract

The term "pickup" refers to a transducer that detects or captures mechanical vibrations made by musical instruments, especially stringed instruments like the electric guitar, and converts these vibrations into an electrical signal that is amplified by an instrument amplifier to produce musical sounds through a loudspeaker in a speaker enclosure. Also possible is direct recording of a pickup's signal.
